'A million things you'll never get to do'      2011

These paintings have developed from my experience of art history  and specifically from an interest in secondary characters that are depicted within Old Master paintings.  This interest exists within a context of my own history as a maker of painterly abstract paintings.

Taking people who are physically or metaphorically in the margins of an earlier painting as a starting point, an ‘abstract’ improvisation occurs alongside the response to the figurative image.

The painting on canvas has the appearance of an expressive modernist painting; however it comes directly from an attempt to copy an improvised painting on paper - the gesture becoming a quotation of itself.
