'Only a change of plan - 3'
a painting in 42 parts         oil paint and pencil on canvas and linen

The intention to make small abstract paintings became an enquiry into the nature of making a painting; questions arose, such as, when is a painting finished?

The painting adopts some forms from earlier art movements, for example, the grid format, the serial forms and the gesture , but these are subverted - the grid is not square, the forms are not uniform, the expressive mark is not arrived at from a 'dramatic gesture' but is treated in an analytical manner, carefully copied from a previous image.
